Portland is home to some of the country’s best climbing and abseiling spots. The sheer limestone cliffs of Westcliff have long attracted climbers eager to test their skills. While some routes are serious climbs, the height is not overly intimidating, making them accessible for those looking to push their limits.
With plenty of starting points along the cliffs, there’s something for every ability—whether you’re a beginner looking for a gentle introduction or an experienced climber seeking a challenge. Whatever your level, Portland’s rugged coastline promises an unforgettable climb.
If you love sea angling, you’re in the right place. Portland is considered one of the top fishing destinations in Britain, attracting anglers from across the country. Its rocky outcrops, hidden coves, and Chesil Beach offer a variety of fishing spots, many of which host national and international competitions throughout the year.
Whether you prefer shore fishing, boat fishing, or casting from the cliffs, there are plenty of prime locations to catch bass, pollock, mackerel, and more.
Portland’s landscape is like nowhere else—a dramatic mix of rugged cliffs, ancient quarries, and sweeping sea views. Made from unique limestone (the same Portland Stone used in iconic buildings worldwide), the island offers an incredible setting for walkers.
While often called an island, Portland is actually connected to the mainland by Chesil Beach, a vast shingle bank with stunning views across Weymouth Bay and the English Channel. Its strategic position has played a key role in maritime history, and in 2012, Portland Harbour became the host site for the Olympic sailing events.
Portland Harbour is famous for its world-class sailing conditions, having hosted the 2012 Olympic sailing events. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced sailor, the Andrew Simpson Centre offers a range of courses for all ages (5+) and abilities.
Learn to sail, refine your technique, or enjoy the thrill of being out on the open water in some of the best sailing conditions in the country.
